'Swann stretches its neck', reports BRW
05 October 2005
‘Business Review Weekly’ has profiled Swann and the company’s plans for ongoing international growth. The article, written by Julia May appears in the September 29 – October 5, 2005 edition within the ‘Emerging Companies’ section under the heading ‘Swann stretches its neck’.
The feature was written following in-depth interviews with Swann’s newly appointed CEO, Dr Ron Lane and Chairman and Founder, Mr David Swann. The article notes, ‘Lane stated his grand ambitions for Swann, with an expected market capitalization of A0 million by 2010.’ It also highlighted the multi-national nature of the business already, noting that in terms of revenue in 2004/05, ‘60% was from international sales’.

‘Lanes says his globalization strategy is low risk because he establishes relationships with distributors first. After increasing sales volumes in these countries, Lane wants to partner large retailers and open sales offices. “Each country is running parallel†he says’.
The article continues, ‘In August, Lane established a Hong Kong sales office, adding to existing logistics and distribution operations. He says Hong Kong will become the company’s quality-control centre, helped by a relationship with Tradeport, a logistics centre at Hong Kong airport. Swann Communications has appointed Tradeport’s chief executive to the board of its Hong Kong subsidiary.’ The article included commentary from Christine Gibbs Stewart, the General Manager of international trade at the employer group Australian Business, and noted ‘this approach is a sensible strategy because many companies that want to expand overseas underestimate the difficulties of setting up in China. “They would want to make sure they have relationships in China, that they are working together, that they have good quality control and understand delivery times. It sounds like (Swann Communications) knows what it is doing in that way,†she says’.
‘Lane is waiting on market research results before setting sales forecasts for each target market, but says the worst-case scenario would be a 10% increase in revenue in 2005-06.’
